If you've recently installed new LED (light emitting diode) turn signal lights in your motorcycle, and they're flashing much faster than before, you'll need to install a load equalizer to fix the problem. This is due to the LED lights requiring much less power than stock incandescent bulbs. The load deficit created by the LEDs causes the turn signals to blink at a faster rate. Load equalizers simulate a higher electrical load, making the turn signals blink at a more standard rate.
1. Turn the motorcycle off and remove the key. Locate the wiring harness that contains the wires running to your front and rear lights.
2. Follow the wiring harness to the plastic connector, usually located under the seat of the motorcycle. Unplug the plastic connector.
3. Plug the male wiring harness plug into the female plug on the load equalizer adapter, then plug the remaining female end into the male side of the adapter. The load equalizer adapter splits the turn signal and ground wires away from the main wiring harness and allows you to plug in the load equalizer.
4. Plug the load equalizer unit into the load equalizer plug on the load equalizer adapter.
5. Turn on the motorcycle and test the turn signals. A slower rate of blinking than before indicates that the load equalizer and adapter have been installed successfully. If not, unplug and reconnect the load equalizer and adapter plugs.
More and more energy conscious people are using light emitting diodes (LED's) to decorate their houses and Christmas trees. Environmentalists consider LED's a better option than traditional Christmas lighting due to their low energy usage and long life. But a recent study indicates that LED lights may not make a Christmas tree "green".
LED's use 90% less energy, last 40 times as long, and produce 1/25th of the heat compared to conventional incandescent lighting. They are more expensive - decorating your tree could cost an additional $40 - so it would take a few years to see a savings. But, because they burn much cooler, using LED's also reduce the chance of a tragic holiday fire. So with all these benefits, are they really greener?
A new study from the University of California's Davis and Irvine campuses says maybe not. Researchers simulated landfill conditions that LED's would face by pulverizing them and adding acid. They then measured the amount of metals that leached out. They tested various colors of 5 mm pin-type LED's. The red LED failed federal standards by leaching an unacceptable level of lead. The other LED's tested released high levels of copper, lead, nickel, or silver according to California standards, which are more rigorous than federal standards. Heavy metals gallium and indium were also detected. The researchers concluded that LED's should be classified as hazardous waste. This points to the dilemma often faced by environmentally conscious consumers. Trade-offs such as between energy efficiency and hazardous waste (as in the case of LED's) need to be considered when making choices. And studies such as the one on LED's are vital to making good choices. LED's are certainly the best option to reduce a household's electric bill and carbon footprint. But when the LED's useful life is over, simply tossing them in the trash would be irresponsible.
Both manufacturers and consumers need to consider the impacts of a product's end-of-life. Companies should either eliminate toxic components from their products or provide recycling options. And consumers need to educate themselves on the ramifications of the products they buy, and be willing to adjust their habits as they learn more.
As LED lighting has become a trend of 2011 in the field of lighting, there are a variety of LED choices before us. How to select a suitable LED light is quite significant to all the consumers. Here is an brief introduction about the standards of LED lighting which may offer you some advice to select LED lights.
Under the stricter requirements of Part L of the UK Building Regulations which came into effect in October 2010, lighting should produce at least 45lm/W measured at the circuit.
It is a measure that a well-designed solid-state LED lighting system can meet quite easily, but care needs to be taken to evaluate the light output of the system properly and this means having effective measures of the energy used and the useful light emitted. While the regulation lays down a clear approach to measuring the power used by a lighting system, there is, unfortunately, still no universally agreed standard method of measuring light output.
The apparent efficiency of a lighting system depends on the point at which you measure the power used. By specifying the mains circuit as the point of reference, the new regulations ensure that all technologies are compared consistently with each other and with incandescent lights which are driven direct from a mains supply: fluorescent lights are driven through an inverter and LEDs need a rectified, usually low-voltage supply.
The regulations ensure that designers look at the efficiency of the drive circuit as well as that of the LED. Older drivers could have an efficiency of as little as 50%, so that an LED producing nominally 70lm/W would only deliver 35lm/W measured at the wall socket.
Best in-class drivers from manufacturers like Mean Well, Lumotech and IST provide 95% efficiency, improving the 'true' output of the LED to 65lm/W. For high-power LEDs of 60W or more it is worth using power-factor corrected drivers.
From the abovementioned, we know that it is important to have some information about the standards of LED lighting, especially the standards of LED output. The LED output is one of the key factors we cannot ignore when choosing LED lights.
